Privacy Policy for Chatastic
Last Updated: Apr 17, 2025
Welcome to Chatastic! This Privacy Policy explains how we handle your information when you use our macOS application. Our core principle is privacy by design: your data stays on your computer, processed locally or sent directly to the AI service provider YOU choose, using YOUR API keys. We do not collect or store your conversation data or API keys on our servers.
1. Information We Handle
- API Keys: To use Chatastic with third-party AI services (like OpenAI, Anthropic, etc.), you need to provide your own API key for that service. This key is stored securely locally on your Mac and is never transmitted to us or any party other than the AI service provider you designate.
- Chat Content (Prompts and Responses): Your chat prompts and the responses generated by the AI service are processed by the app.
- Transmission: Your prompts are sent directly from your computer to the third-party AI service provider associated with the API key you provided. The AI's responses are sent back directly to the app on your computer.
- Local Storage: Your chat history (prompts and responses) is stored locally on your Mac for your convenience.
- Configuration Settings: App preferences or settings you configure are stored locally on your Mac.
- Analytics: We do not collect any usage analytics.
2. How We Use Information
- API Keys: Used solely to authenticate your requests with the third-party AI service provider you have configured.
- Chat Content: Used only to interact with the chosen AI service provider API. Your prompts are sent to them for processing, and their responses are displayed back to you in the app.
- Local Storage: Used to retain your API keys securely and [if applicable] your chat history and settings on your device for your use.
- Analytics (If applicable): Used to understand app usage patterns, identify bugs, and improve performance and features.
3. Information Sharing and Third Parties
- AI Service Providers: When you use the app, your prompts are sent directly to the third-party AI service provider whose API key you are using (e.g., OpenAI, Anthropic). The handling of this data by the provider is governed by their respective Privacy Policies and Terms of Service. We strongly recommend you review the policies of any AI service you choose to use with Chatastic. We are not responsible for the data practices of these third-party AI providers.
- Us (The Developer): We do not receive, store, or have access to your API keys or the content of your chats (prompts and responses). Your data remains on your local machine or is transmitted directly between your machine and the third-party AI service provider.
- Legal Requirements: We may disclose information if required to do so by law or in the good faith belief that such action is necessary to comply with a legal obligation.
4. Data Security
We take reasonable measures to protect the information handled by the app locally on your device.
- API keys are stored securely using platform-specific mechanisms.
- All data transmission initiated by the app occurs directly between your Mac and the selected third-party AI service provider, typically over HTTPS/TLS encrypted connections (dependent on the provider's API).
- Since data primarily resides on your device or is handled by third-party APIs, the security of your own computer and your management of API keys are crucial.
5. User Control and Responsibility
- You have control over which AI service provider API keys you add to the app.
- You are responsible for managing your API keys, including their security and any costs associated with their usage charged by the AI service provider.
- You control the content you input as prompts. We advise against inputting sensitive personal information (e.g., financial details, health information, private identification numbers) into the application, as this data will be processed by the third-party AI provider according to their policies.
- You can manage or delete your locally stored chat history.
6. Children's Privacy
Chatastic is not intended for use by children under the age of 13 (or 16 in some jurisdictions). We do not knowingly collect any personal information from children. If you believe a child has provided us with information, please contact us.
7. Changes to This Privacy Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. We will notify you of any changes by posting the new Privacy Policy within the app or on our website. You are advised to review this Privacy Policy periodically for any changes.
